Welcome to my Blog.

In our Blog you will find Wedding, Portrait, Commercial, Family and some oddball Photography. We have been asked several times to define our style of Wedding photography and of course there is a whole host of words out there to describe photographic styles, photojournalism, reportage, traditional, documentary, fine art and the list goes on. We have come to realise that our (Ruth and I work together) style is based primarily around intimate images. We do all the other schtuff mentioned before but a common theme that runs through our work is 'intimacy'. The wedding is about the couple and the rest of us are there to observe. But ultimately it is about the love that the couple have for each other. That is what we seek to represent in the photographs we produce. You are the best judge of whether we succeed.

The life of a Cumbria Wedding Photographer can certainly be full of surprises. Sam and Brogan are getting married in July so we needed to get underway with the pre-wedding shoot. When we got together to discuss some ideas for their Lake District pre wedding photography Sam and Brogan expressed their desire to be photographed in a scrapyard and wanted to go for an ‘earthy’ look. So how to interpret that brief into a look that matched the expectation was a challenge we pondered for a few days. Whilst thinking about that we also started looking for scrapyards! Now I have to say neither Kendal nor Cumbria are blessed with a lot of choice as far as scrapyards are concerned. In fact we could only find one based near Kendal. That is owned by Brian Gregg and is based at The Old Cooperage, Gatebeck. I gave Brian a call and fortunately he was very happy to allow us to use his yard for an hour or so. We had also spotted a graffiti wall, another rare occurence in Cumbria, not too far away so suggested to Sam and Brogan that would fit in with the theme they were looking for. The shoot itself was really enjoyable and it gave us a chance to experiment with some slightly more ‘quirky’ images than would normally be the case on a pre wedding shoot. We haven’t yet discussed with them what they would like for the Wedding shoot itself but as I am told Brogan has got a beautiful wedding dress I cannot imagine it will be done in a scrapyard!
I had an interesting and unexpected email recently from Truprint, a large National chain of photography retailers, who had found the Schtuff website whilst looking for wedding blogs. Having looked through our site they then asked if we would contribute to their own blog on an occasional basis to give advice on wedding photography. Now I have to say I was delighted and honoured that Schtuff Photography had been asked although it took me a little while to get the first article prepared for them, due to the amount of photography and blogging for our own site! The good news is that the first blog article is to be published on the Truprint website in the next two weeks. Since then I have also received another request from a Wedding Photographers Directory asking for the same thing so it is really good to know that people are enjoying our Schtuff!

Keeping up to date with my Blog for Cumbria Wedding Photography is almost a full time task in itself. I am now way behind in placing images on this wedding blog for assignments I have been carrying out in April and May. I shot a lifestyle shoot for Sophie at the beginning of April that I have recently finished processing, a wedding photography shoot for Steve and Lorraine that I have just uploaded to the Client area on Schtuff Photography, a pre wedding shoot for Sam and Brogan that was a really unusual one (more on that later) and a baby shoot for Kate that I haven’t even got round to post processing yet. Coming up soon is the wedding photography for Neil and Caroline and also the wedding photography for Ricci and Penelope. Busy times!
I wanted to share with you some more of the photographs from the wedding photography at Hazlewood Castle near Leeds as I have just finished all the post processing work. It is such a fantastic location to enjoy the privilege of shooting a Clients wedding. Before we left at night the Manager gave my wife and I a tour of the whole building and a history lesson on its origins and life. Many thanks. Taking wedding photographs is a very interesting challenge and of course different photographers do it in very different ways. One of my favourite wedding photographers is Jonas Peterson, an ex copy writer who lives in Australia but is now travelling the world on wedding assignments. Jonas only started taking on paid work in 2008 but has already been named by American Photo magazine as one of the top 10 wedding photographers in the world. I can only describe his style as bizzare and quirky but I really like it. I am not sure the couples who get married in the UK are quite up to the nature of his work but it will be interesting to watch how trends evolve. Anyway it is worth having a look at his work on http://jonaspeterson.com. Whilst I was out with Sam and Brogan we did some of our own experimentation as they wanted to be photographed in a scrapyard! So keep watching for their blog.

Just lately I seemed to have spent more time out of Cumbria than in it photographing weddings, events and commercial work. This week I was over at Hazlewood Castle near Leeds taking wedding photography for a lovely young couple. If you have never been to Hazlewood Castle I can thoroughly recommend it. It was built in the 11th Century and it has everything for a wedding. As a Cumbria Wedding Photographer I am privileged to work with beautiful surroundings, lakes and mountains, rivers and valleys where by necessity we usually have to travel around a little to ensure variety of backdrop. So it made quite a change to be able to find all the backdrops in one location and certainly made it easier for the Bride and Groom. The other exciting thing to happen recently is that Schtuff Photography has been appointed by both GraphiStudio and Queensberry Albums to carry their range and I already have some of these in stock to show you. I have a lot more to process from our day together at Hazlewood so keep refreshing those screens.
